German-way posts

The "What do you wish you'd brought" messages, May 16 and 17 in the German Way yahoo groups has some good information about what to bring and what to leave. OTC medicines, toiletries, and various baking ingredients seem to be at the top of every list for what to bring over. Should also bring a good supply of the prescription medicines to last until we figure out how to get them over there - asthma inhalers specifically. One person weighed in saying it was cheaper and easier to live with converters and adapters and use their old american electrical appliances till they quit working. I'm doubtful about this...and there's really not much that we have that would be worth the cost to ship it over.

Use your judgement - don't ship all the small stuff over. Here's an example of stuff we bought in Basel: coffee bean grinder, blender, toaster, coffee maker, vacuum cleaner, clock radios, computer printer, T.V.. stereo, boombox, lamps, iron, freezer, etc. There's probably more, but I can't think of them right now.

Yeah, that is basically what I was thinking. I don't think we will be shipping much at all over, probably not even our books (at least until we have a better idea how long we might end up over there). Plus, if we're renting a furnished apartment, that might have a lot of those things already. I'm not sure how available those are (furnished apartments), but it'd likely be easier and perhaps cheaper in the long run than buying everything new and then having to get rid of it if/when we leave. We are hoping that MrB can get a job in one of the pharma companies there if we like it...so that will influence everything.

As far as I know, there aren't that many furnished apartments in Basel. But I'm sure that the pharma companies can help you in finding the right thing. I also agree with TBF: leave the small stuff at home. Uhhm.... "Baking ingredients" was at the top, too??

Hi CS! Thanks for stopping by! Yes, things like chocolate chips, baking soda or powder, brown sugar, pure vanilla, cream of tartar, Crisco, Bisquik, ranch dressing mix...apparently hard to find in Germany at least. A lot of that stuff I don't use - the brand name things, and I don't think it'd be that bad to break up chocolate instead of using chips, if I had to have chocolate chip cookies. The first 4 or 5 items would be about all I'd bring...though it might be nice to bring some ranch dressing mix for TBF since he likes that! :)

Chocolate chips, baking soda, pure vanilla (you're talking real vanilla beans, right?) and cream of tartar, you can all get at Globus in Basel. Ranch dressing and crisco, not. Actually, they just started selling (in Germany) Miracle whip a couple of years ago. Finally!!!

Yeah, we have converters and transformers and power strips to accomodate plugs from 3 different countries in our kitchen. There must be a better way...
